Public Charter School District Meeting Needs of the Whole Child

COLUMBIA, S.C. (March 1, 2021) – The South Carolina Public Charter School District’s Youth Mental Health First Aid training equips schools to adequately assess and understand adverse situations while effectively supporting and engaging students.

“The Youth Mental Health First Aid training provided an understanding of what mental health is and why it is so important for youth to have support as they are developing and walking this great adventure, we call life,” said Kerri Camp, assistant principal at Spartanburg Preparatory School. “With the foundational knowledge and additional resources from the training, we will be able to confidently take a quicker first step in recognizing the signs and providing support to someone who might be experiencing a crisis.”

This eight-hour training, offered at no cost to staff of Public Charter School District schools, teaches adults the skills needed for providing initial support to children and adolescents ages six through 18 who may be developing a mental health or substance use concern. The topics covered include common signs and symptoms of mental illness in this age group, including anxiety, depression, eating disorders and attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD) as well as signs and symptoms of substance use, how to interact with a child or adolescent in crisis and how to connect the person with help. The training is recommended for all school staff.

“As a certified school counselor, I cannot begin to express my gratitude for this program,” said Erin Cockfield, a school counselor at Charleston Advancement Academy. “It was so great to be reminded that what we are doing is proven to work for students who have mental health concerns, both underlying and explicit.”
